| Calcined
Bauxite for higher realizations |
As
part of its commitment to move up the value chain with
value added products, Ashapura a few years ago. very
successfully started producing Calcined Bauxite.
Calcined
Bauxite is obtained by calcining (heating) superior
grade Bauxite at high temperature (from 850°C to
1600°C). This removes moisture and therefore increases
the alumina content. Compared to an alumina content
of about 47% to 49% in raw Bauxite, calcined bauxite
has an alumina content of about 87% to 89%. The heating
is carried out in rotary kilns — Ashapura currently
operates three kilns (capacity 90,000 tons per annum)
at its state–of-the-art plant in Jamnager.Calcination
is done at different temperatures ranging from 850 to
1600 degrees depending upon their necessity. Calcined
Bauxite is mainly used for refractories and abrasives.
The product is sold to clients in the domestic market.
Ashapura also exports over 3,000 tonnes of the specialised
product in the international market.
Bauxite
is typically classified according to its intended commercial
application:
