85% of the bauxite
produced in the world goes in the manufacture of aluminium.
Bauxite is converted to alumina using the Bayer refining
process which includes digestion, clarification, precipitation
and calcination.
With its Kutch Alumina
Refinery project Ashapura has
reached its ultimate goal in value addition. To take
advantage of the big Chinese demand for alumina Ashapura
along with its Chinese partner will set up a refinery
with a 1million ton per annum capacity. The Chinese
partner will buy 75% of the total production. The project
will be completed in two phases and will cost approximately
Rs. 2500 crores.
The partnership is
ideal since Ashapura has access to huge reserves of
high quality bauxite and has long experience of processing
bauxite while the Chinese partner has excellent expertise
and experience in alumina refinery.
